Sulwhasoo Clarifying Mask

I'm not a fan of peel off masks, my skin is already dehydrated so I tend to use them only when I feel necessary. I much prefer chemical exfoliation to physical, but sometimes we just need something to absorb that excess oil and peel off surface. One of the main reasons why I gave this mask a shot is because its really popular in the Korean beauty world, and well its Sulwhasoo! I jut love their hanbang smell ;). I have been using the Sulwhasoo clarifying mask for a while now and I can definitely tell you I'm not disappointed...

Sulwhasoo Clarifying Mask

The Sulwahsoo Clarifying Mask is described as a gentle peel off mask that lifts impurities and dead skin cells to detoxify and clarify skin. According to Sulwhasoo the product contains a unique honey-textured treatment formulated with Solomonseal powder to absorb impurities, Japanese Honeysuckle to hydrate and brighten, and a powerful blend of Korean medical herbs to exfoliate and purify skin for a clearer complexion.

Cosdna analyses shows no red flags, ingredient listWater, Polyvinyl Alcohol, Alcohol, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Polygonatum Officinale Rhizome/Root Extract, Peg-75, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Glycyrrhiza Uralensis (Licorice) Root Extract, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Ophiopogon Japonicus Root Extract Paeonia Albiflora Root Extract, Nelumbo Nucifera Seed Extract, Lilium Tigrinum Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Rehmannia Glutinosa Root Extract, Chrysanthemum Morifolium Flower Extract, Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract, Citrus Unshiu Peel Extract, Adenophora Stricta Root Extract, Lycium Chinense Root Extract, Coix Lacryma-Jobi Ma-Yuen Seed Extract, Angelica Tenuissima Root Extract, Honey, Honey Extract, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Beta-Glucan, Peg-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Bentonite, Cellulose Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Propanediol, Disodium Edta, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

Like all Sulwahsoo products, the peel-off mask uses a blend of traditional Korean medical herbs, its not hardcore science and many ingredients haven't  been proved to deliver skincare benefits, but after using many of their products, 'hanbang' skincare managed to seduce me and convince me of their efficacy.

Packaging

The product comes in a gold beige tube packaging, that is hygienic and portable. I like the packaging, its elegant, easy to use and looks pretty on the dress table. A regular full size tube has 150ml of product, I have two sample size tubes of 50ml that I got on ebay. I know that in Korea you can get the 50ml tube for free at the Sulwahsoo counter, yes 50ml sample unbelievable!! its really a sample as it says not for sale.

Application

The texture is thick, has a brown honey color with small brown dots (I guess the herbs..), I would say it feels almost like a real non sticky honey texture. To spread it evenly on your face you have to be fast, as its not easy to spread and drys instantly. I have to use quit a lot of product to cover my face and try to apply it in a one stroke pattern so it would be easier to peel off. I leave it on for around 25-35 minutes, then slowly peel it off and use a damp towel to take of some remaining residue's. I don't want risking removing any 'beneficial effects' so I don't wash my face afterwards.

I applied the mask after cleansing, which is what we all normally do with peel off masks. Strangely, the instructions say to use after your emulsion..? How confusing, I didn't even try using after my emulsion as I was afraid it would take off all the layers I applied before. I don't know maybe I should try it that way and report back to you, it seems to work for some so who knows maybe I will like it.

Performance

The peel off mask didn't feel dry or uncomfortable, although there was a slight tingling sensation. The first time I tried the mask the tingling sensation was stronger which kind of scared me at first, to my relieve there was no irritation or redness. After repeated use the tingling sensation is gone..?, for some reason. After removing it ,just wow, my face feels so clear. To be honest its difficult to explain the clear feeling, but its not a dry feeling. Actually, compared to other peel off masks I used in the past this one doesn't leave that dry stripped feeling behind, the main reason why I love the mask so much. My skin looks also brighter and smoother. It wont get rid of clogged pores and absorb sebum like a clay mask, but that's fine with me. My skin is so sensitive so I don't need any strong physical exfoliation, its gentle enough for me.

Final thoughts

I love this peel off mask. It works well on my sensitive skin while also removing surface impurities and dead skin. Its indeed a clarifying not clay mask. I also love the blend of Korean medical herbs and the signature Sulwhasoo scent.
Will I repurchase? probably yes, its one of the less explosive Sulwhasoo products and the full size product costs the same as the small tube, per ml. Full size 150ml for around 39$, sample size 50ml costs around 14$ on ebay.

You can purchase it at with W2beauty* for 39.70 euro. First time orders can use my sponsor code 2228165312 to receive $5 off! (international free shipping)

  1. I've never been a fan of peel off masks either because it's so hard to peel off perfectly! This sounds like a terrific mask though. Haha, wonderful review. Thanks for sharing <3
